1. Know What Formats You're Dealing With

- VHS (1977–2000s): The large cassette most associated with home video. Degrades the most severely over time. If you have VHS tapes recorded before 2000, treat them as urgent.
- VHS-C (1980s–1990s): A compact version of VHS used in smaller camcorders. Requires an adapter to play in a standard VHS player.
- Betamax (1975–1988): Sony's rival to VHS. Rarer, but still found in many households. Players are scarce — professional digitisation is usually the best route.
- 8mm / Hi8 / Digital8 (1985–2000s): Small cassettes used in Sony camcorders. Hi8 and Digital8 offer better quality than VHS. Digital8 cameras can often play Hi8 tapes too.

Sort through what you have and make a list. Formats that require a working player to digitise (VHS, Betamax, VHS-C) are highest priority — those players are getting harder to find and the tapes are the most fragile.
2. Your Three Options for Digitising Home Videos
There's no single right answer here — the best option depends on how many tapes you have, your budget, and how much time you want to invest.
Option A: DIY with a capture device
You can buy a USB video capture device (typically £20–50) that connects between a VHS player and your computer. You play the tape in real time and the software captures the footage as a digital file.
This works reasonably well and gives you full control. The downsides: you need a working VHS player (increasingly difficult to find), it's slow (a 2-hour tape takes 2 hours), and capture quality varies by device.

3. Once You Have the Digital Files: Don't Just Put Them in a Folder
